Brow Lift

Repositioning of the brow and forehead enhancing facial appearance and perception of expression

braʊ lɪft

The ideal position of the brow is determined by your preference, gender, racial background and overall facial proportions and harmony.  Its relationship to the superior orbital rim, or upper eye socket margin, in terms of height and curvature has a powerful impact on the demeanour you portray.  In addition to the aesthetic influence on your appearance, a heavy brow may also have functional implications by weighing down onto the upper eyelids with the potential consequence of partial visual field obstruction.

Various elements and areas of the brow and forehead may be of concern such as excess skin, position of the brow, position of the hairline and wrinkles.  Placement of incision and method of approach will be determined by your areas of concern and specific goals you want to achieve.

A brow lift can be executed through a direct or indirect approach.  A direct approach places an incision along the eyebrow itself, whereas indirect brow lifts utilise incisions that are placed in the scalp or temple within or behind the hairline.

Technical factors to consider when discussing and performing a brow lift are where the incisions are placed, which anatomical plane of dissection is used and what the method of fixation is.
Delivering a tailored approach that works best for you ensures your procedure is safe, effective and satisfactory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where and how extensive will the scars be?

There are many techniques described to raise the brow and forehead. One of the variables is placement of incision.  A direct brow lift places incisions along the eyebrows, whereas an indirect approach utilises incisions that are placed within or behind the hairline.  These may range from long or short endoscopic incisions.  Incisions become permanent scars, which may take 12-18 months to completely settle down.

What type of anaesthesia do I require and how long will I be in hospital for?

General anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic or sedation may be used for a direct brow lift.  A brow lift is usually performed as day surgery.

How long does the surgery take?

An indirect brow lift takes 1 hour.  A direct brow lift, 45 minutes.

How long will I take to recover?

Light daily activities and walking can continue.  Returning to work will very much depend on the nature of your role.  More strenuous activity including sports can be commenced after 6 weeks.
